Tasdeaf Wins Support for Visual Smoke Alarms

IMPORTANT NEWS - Visual Smoke Alarms:

After years of lobbying to the Tasmanian Government about access to Visual Smoke Alarms, Grant and Catherine’s tireless efforts have paid off.

On Thursday 3rd December at the Hobart Office of Tasdeaf, the Minister of Human Services, Lin Thorpe, announced that the Tasmanian Goverment will fund 90% of the cost of installing specialised smoke alarms in the homes of deaf and hard of hearing Tasmanians. This initative will mean that the smoke alarms will be available at a subsidised cost of $50.

The recommendations that were put forward were developed in partnership with Tasmania Fire Services and Department of Health and Human Services (Disability and Housing). A special thankyou to Annie Curtis from Housing Tasmania, Chris Tomes, Jeff Knight, Sandra Barber from the Tasmanian Fire Service. Maggie Aird and Kelly Ford from Disability Services for their fantastic effort.

Roll out of the Smoke Alarms will be based on a priority system and will commence late January 2010.
