Wednesday, 7 July 2010 Tasdeaf announces new Chief Executive Officer
The Tasmanian Deaf Society (Tasdeaf) is proud to announce that Mr Gordon Melsom has been appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Mr Colin Allen, the acting CEO will return to the Deaf Society of NSW as Director of Services.
Gordon brings a wealth of expertise to Tasdeaf with over 20 years experience as a practising manager and leader. Ten of these years have been as a CEO with a range of prominent non-for-profit organisations including Diabetes Australia (ACT), Relationships Australia (WA) and Homelessness Australia.
Gordon’s credentials also include serving on several boards such as the University of Notre Dame Australia School of Counselling & Health (WA), Family Law Foundation (WA), Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre (WA) and Technical Aid to the Disabled (ACT). He has also lectured at Edith Cowan in the School of Business and Public Sector Management, Notre Dame Universities and the Curtin University Graduate School of Management.
Tasdeaf Board Chairperson, Ms Alex Newton, said that, on behalf of the Board of Directors, she was delighted to welcome Gordon to Tasdeaf as its new CEO.
Upon commencing as CEO on July 8, Mr Gordon Melsom will be available for interviews.

Welcome Acting Chief Executive Officer
Colin Allen was raised in a Deaf family in Sydney and graduated with a Diploma in Community Organisations from the University of Technology, Sydney. In his varied professional career, Colin has worked as a professional actor with the Australian Theatre of the Deaf, the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf (Ohio, USA) and the Sunshine Too Company (National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester, New York, USA); and was an AIDS Educator for the Deaf Community in Sydney. He has also worked as a National Manager, Telecommunications Equipment Programs at the Australian Communication Exchange.
Colin has been heavily involved with the Deaf Community in Sydney and participated actively in the activities of the Australian Association of the Deaf (now known as Deaf Australia), serving as President for nine years. In July 2003 he was elected a board member of the World Federation of the Deaf.
Colin has a wealth of experience in working in the international Deaf sector. Between September 2000 and May 2007, Colin was employed by the Finnish Association of the Deaf and had postings in Albania, Cambodia and Kosovo. Colin has conducted survey projects in Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkey in collaboration with their national Deaf Associations. In 2007 Colin started as an International Project Co-ordinator for the Global Education Pre-Planning Project on the Human Rights of Deaf People conducting regional survey work of Deaf people in Eastern Europe, Middle Asia, Asia and the Pacific, South America, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Eastern and Southern Africa, Western and Central Africa and Arabia States with the World Federation of the Deaf.
In October, 2009, Colin Allen commenced his new position as Director of Services with the Deaf Society of NSW. Colin will be working on secondment as Acting Chief Executive Officer at TasDeaf for the next six – eight weeks.

What is AUSLAN?
AUSLAN is Australian Sign Language. It is the language of the Deaf community in Australia and it was recognised as a language by the Federal Government in 1981. It is a visual language incorporating signs, body language and facial expressions.
How does AUSLAN work?
Auslan is not a visual form of English, rather it is a language in its own right, with its own grammar rules and features. An example:
English: I want to go to the shops
AUSLAN: I shop I want go
