Medibank Private has made two policy changes that will be of interest to
some of you. While the changes might only benefit a small number, they
are nevertheless welcome. Hopefully other private health insurers might
follow suit.
On 12 March 2003 Medibank Private introduced a policy whereby some
benefits are payable where a member has been supplied with a subsidised hearing
aid.
This benefits eligible fund members where a "third party payer" exists,
e.g. where the member obtains an aid using a government voucher but opts to
pay an extra (top up) to obtain particular features. Medibank Private will
now pay benefits in respect of the top up costs. Prior to 12 March 2003 it
was not Medibank Private's policy to pay benefits in such instances.
Medibank Private has advised that it is happy to reassess any benefit entitlement
where a member can demonstrate that, following the introduction of the
new policy, the appropriate level of benefit has not been paid. Payment of
any benefit is subject to Medibank Private's standard processing rules, e.g.
the total amount payable from all sources must not exceed the amount charged;
there should be no entitlement to compensation or damages; claims must
be submitted within two years of the date of service, etc.
Also, effective from 1 July 2003, it will no longer be necessary for
Medibank Private members (who hold the appropriate levels of extras
cover) to obtain a referral from a medical practitioner before being entitled
to benefits for hearing aids.
